A Lightweight 3D-Printed Cast That Uses Ultrasound To Speed Bone Healing

Turkish industrial designer Deniz Karasahin has created a concept design for a 3D-printed cast that could heal bone fractures more quickly than conventional medical cast.

Called the ‘Osteoid’, it is a lightweight cast that uses low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to quicken the healing process.

By wearing it daily for 20 minutes, it is said to “reduce the healing process up to 38% and increase the heal rate up to 80% in non-union fractures”.

The Osteoid won the 2014 Golden A’ Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design Category. To learn more about it, please click here.
