A year ago, we featured Pentagram’s redesign of New York City’s parking signs. This time, designer Nikki Sylianteng has come up with her own redesign.
Unlike Pentagram, Sylianteng opted for a more visual approach that would enable drivers to see when they could park at a glance.
“My strategy was to visualize the blocks of time when parking is allowed and not allowed. I kept everything else the same—the colors and the form factor—as my intention with this redesign is to show how big a difference a thoughtful, though conservative and low budget, approach can make in terms of time and stress saved for the driver,” she said.
Indeed, her design is easier to comprehend, using “Parking” and “No Parking” symbols, as well as green and red to convey her message.
Sylianteng has also come up with a version of these signs for the color-blind, and is in the process of modifying it to better suit their needs. The designer is also open to suggestions—you can give feedback on her Tumblr blog, To Park Or Not To Park.
