It was April Fools’ Day yesterday and the internet was ablaze with pranks. After its delightful Google Maps Pokémon stunt, the search giant unveiled another prank that taps into our selfie-obsessed culture.
In a blog post on Tuesday, it introduced a ‘Shelfie’ feature for Gmail that lets you create a custom theme for your email background that you can share with others. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the name is a combination of ‘share’ and ‘selfie.’
“As the pioneering platform for selfies, Gmail is committed to being at the forefront of innovation in the selfie space. And we think it’s a tragedy that your handsome hair, luscious lashes and beautiful brows have been trapped in your own inbox,” said Google Software Engineer Greg Bollock.
To access, users just had to open or refresh their Gmail and select the option at the bottom of their screen. It seems the feature is no longer available, but you can take a look at trending ‘Shelfies’ here.
