The ARION1 does not look like a bicycle, especially with its sleek capsule-like shape. However, this vehicle is supposed to be the world’s “fastest” bike.
Developed by the University of Liverpool’s velocipede team, this bicycle is supposedly able to achieve a speed of 90 mph. Its outer shell is aerodynamic and will house a rider within. The rider will be able to monitor his surroundings using a camera and a computer, and is supposed to pedal in a recumbent position.
“It’s an extremely tough task to get a human-powered vehicle to travel at 90mph—but with the right engineering approach it is possible,” said Philippa Oldham, the head of transport of the Institution of Mechanical Engineering.
The current record for the world’s fastest bike stands at 83.1mph, and was set by a Dutch team in 2012—the team hopes to get this bicycle ready by May 2015 so that they can beat it.
What do you think—is this the bicycle of the future, or do you prefer traveling at less break-neck speed on a regular bicycle?
