Armor-Like Dresses That Have Been ‘Grown’ From Magnets

Dutch product designer Jolan Van Der Wiel and fashion designer Iris van Herpen has collaborated to produce the “Wilderness Embodied” clothing collection, which includes a couple of dresses that have been “grown” from magnets.

The chunky, metallic garment look like futuristic armor—adding a mixture of iron fillings and resin to fabric, the designers then used magnets to pull the resulting substance into unusual textures.

Each dress took three weeks to “grow”—van Herpen, “the dresses’ very forms are generated by the phenomenon of attraction and repulsion”.

One of the few places where these dresses would not look out of place would be on the stage—which is hardly surprising, considering that van Herpen’s fans includes pop stars like Lady Gaga and Bjork, who are known for their otherworldly costumes.
