Student housing architecture is not known to be particularly inspiring, but French studio Atelier Fernandez & Serres has created a eye-catching building for the lucky students of the Oceanological Observatory of Banyuls-sur-Mer, part of the Paris-based Université Pierre et Marie Curie.
Inspired by its ocean-side location, the six-story building is clad in a latticed, coral-pink concrete façade that shields the interiors but lets in light and ventilation.
According to the architects, the “colourful concrete mesh is at the same time a balustrade and a visual filter to the sea” and “provides a wall that guarantees the intimacy of users, bedrooms and walkways”.
