Last year, “selfie” was named word of the year. Kyle Warfield has taken notice of this trend and shot a self-portrait everyday in 2013, creating this hypnotic GIF with incredibly smooth transitions.
The 23-year-old embarked on this project, 'Last Year Of Selfies', to show how “inauthentic” people could be, pointing out that people take “selfies” as they are “hungry for attention”. He also stated that many have come to rely on likes and comments on social media to validate themselves.
Warfield also told the Reddit community that this project was difficult as he had to ensure that the GIF transitioned seamlessly. He always positioned the new photo so that his eyes were lined up with the previous shot, and had to re-shoot if he could not make the transitions work.
The designer also experienced difficulty animating the transitions in which he took his shirt off. At one point, he had to secure the pose with a safety pin and erase it in Adobe Photoshop.
This creative project also serves to make fun of people to make themselves look good with “selfies”—instead of trying to accentuate his best features, Warfield has done his best to make silly faces and distort them instead.
What do you think—is this GIF a humorous take on our egoistical tendencies?
