There are craft beers made with fruit, vegetables and nuts, but have you ever come across one that is made from real prehistoric fossils?
Introducing the ‘Bone Dusters Paleo Ale’, a beer brewed from a 35-million-year-old whale fossil. It’s the brainchild of Jason Osborne, co-founder of Paleo Quest, a non-profit dedicated to advancing paleontology and geology, who hit upon the idea of a craft beer to get people interested in science.
He enlisted Jasper Akerboom, a brewing scientist from the Lost Rhino Brewing Company, to conduct yeast samples on the fossils dug up by Paleo Quest.
Instead of discovering a new strain of wild yeast, they found a new subspecies of the strain that is commonly used by breweries and wineries worldwide.
If you’re interested in tasting this unusual ale, you can get it directly from the Lost Rhino Brewing Company in Ashburn, Virginia. Only 650 gallons will be available initially but the company eventually hopes to offer it through distributors and supply scientific meetings too.
