The town of Vail, Colorado, engaged architecture firm tres birds workshop to build a kids playground for Lionshead, Vail, and they created a delightful ‘nest’ playground.
The playground they created is called ‘Sun Bird’, and it reflects both the assets of the park as well as an ode to vintage ski culture.
It is a part of the town’s artist-commissioned park program, where tres birds workshop was given the reign to design and implement something that would leave a lasting memory on Vail residents and visitors.
Taking inspiration from surrounding bird habitats, architects conceptualized three large nests structures that mimic original ski design. The large nests are built from a mix of wood.
It was crucial to use non-toxic materials in building the park, so each rib was treated using a mixture of oil, wax and tree resin.
A classic rope and bridge feature connects the nests, and an additional climbing wall allows kids of all ages and heights to be challenged during play.
The playground was also designed to allow children with disabilities and adaptive skills enjoy the playground with little difficulty.
Not just a playground, these ‘nests’ are also a delightful visual sight for all to enjoy.
