Negative space

Instead of using numbers, graphic designer Mark Gonyea has found new ways of counting from one to a hundred.
For his graphic design project ‘One to One Hundred’, he creates posters that use different design representations to illustrate the numbers, ranging from negative space and lines to dots and pixels.
Each number on the posters is illustrated with a different shape or design. As the number goes higher, the design becomes more and more complicated.
Speaking with Fast Co.Design, he said, “My design has always had a good amount of math behind it. It’s an old design mantra but limitations really do promote creativity.”
He added, “The more elements, the more pieces I had to work with and the more intricate and interesting the designs became. It really showed me how infinitely flexible design can be.”
The posters are available for sale on his Kickstarter for US$20 apiece.
