You can trust the conscientious Japanese to put a lot of effort and research into solving the most mundane of problems—for instance, how to eat a burger without having its contents spill out.
Japanese TV show Honma Dekka!? enlisted the help of experts in mechanics, engineering and dentistry to find the best way to hold and eat a large burger.
After studying a 3D scan of a hamburger that shows how the different fillings interact while it is being held, they found that the conventional way of holding a burger—thumbs on the bottom and fingers on top—leads to the contents being pushed out of the bun.
They also found an ideal way to hold the burger that would avoid spillage—by placing the three middle fingers on top of the bun with the pinkies and thumbs below, the burger is held uniformly and the fillings are secured in place.
Would you convert to this scientifically best way to eat a burger, or would you continue to eat messily because that is half the fun?
