Best friends and poets Carina Finn and Stephanie Berger are fluent “speakers” of Emoji—in fact, they have been writing Emoji poems together for quite some time.

Proving that instant messaging—and its conspicuous lack of regard for grammar—is not all bad for the literary scene, the creative duo has produced some surprisingly well-written stanzas.

After composing a poem consisting only of the bright, cartoonish pictographs, Finn would send it to Berger, who would then “translate” it into readable words.

According to Berger, “The emoji poems saw us each through a few different lovers, several jobs, three countries, three seasonal wardrobe changes, and even hurricane Sandy. I think of the poems as operating within a kind of secret language between girls; they are filled with our secrets, and only we know the code.”
