Benjamin M. Schmidt, an assistant history professor at Boston’s Northeastern University, has created a series of subway maps that show the real layouts of cities and train routes.
The ‘Corrected Subway Maps’ series features the subway maps of cities like Boston, New York City, and Washington DC crinkled and crushed to provide a more accurate representation of each city’s transit system. They reveal a similarity shared by all three cities, which is the striking difference between their dense inner cores and spread-out metro regions. As the routes stretch out into the suburbs, the distance between subway stops increases and the number of riders decreases.
