Fancy having a tiny 3D pixelated figure of yourself? How about one of your cat, favorite band or cartoon character? This will soon be a reality thanks to a new app called ‘LEBLOX’.
Created by Paris-based technical director Mathieu Lecoupeur and creative director Soy Phompraseuth, it lets you create 3D pixelated models of anything you desire.
Users can create their own customized pixelated images and avatars or pixelated versions of any image. They can also browse, comment on and print other people’s creations. A physical figure costs €20–users order it through the app and it takes a few weeks to arrive. Figures are currently shipped from France but the creators are looking into procuring a printer in the US.
According to Phompraseuth, ‘LEBLOX’ leverages on the current pixel movement and harkens back to a time when design was simpler. “Today a 3-D hair model looks more realistic than real hair and this makes it ‘unreal.’ I think pixel art has something reassuring in it, because a simple colored square/cube IS STILL a square or cube. It’s fundamental.”
With 3D set to be the future of technology and a trend towards customized products, we forsee all manner of interesting and wacky trinkets being created.
‘LEBOX’ will be available in the Apple store in March. What are your thoughts on it?
