Photographer Challenges Gender Norms In Relationships With Provocative Photos

Start your day with a good breakfast together

Chinese photographer Yijun Liao has an on-going photo series titled ‘Experimental Relationship’ in which she challenges gender norms in relationships through a set of provocative images.

She was inspired to embark on this project after meeting her boyfriend Moro, a Japanese who is five years younger than her. As she was brought up to believe she could only love someone older and more mature, she started questioning her ideas about relationships now that she was in a position of power and authority.

In her images, Liao and her boyfriend role play in a variety of scenarios–she is depicted eating off his naked body and bent over him with her hair obscuring their faces, while Moro is shown wrapped as a giant sushi roll and wearing her dress. Liao assumes control in many of the scenes, coming across as assertive and dominant while Moro is portrayed as submissive and compliant.

“By exploring alternate possibilities for a man and a woman as a couple, these photos question the norm for heterosexual relationships. I wanted to see what would happen if a woman and man exchanged their roles of sex and power.”
