Photography Director Captures Striking Photos Of Light Hitting The NYT Building

Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine, has a striking photo series titled ‘The Office Romance’ in which she captures beautiful photos of light hitting the New York Times building.

Ryan was inspired to start the series after noticing a ray of sunlight forming a zigzag pattern on some stairs one day. Since then she began shooting with a passion, often coming to work early and staying late to get the best shots.

In a profile on the Instagram blog, she said “I am always looking for the poetic moments in office life. I never cease to be surprised by how light can transform the most ordinary objects into something special. The office life is a huge part of many our lives and yet it is rarely documented or celebrated.”

Her photos possess a serenity and calm, revealing beautiful patterns and silhouettes that go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of daily life. One image shows a stack of magazines illuminated in alternate layers while another photo shows light casting bold and crisp geometric lines in an empty office.

Dreamy, evocative and always dramatic, Ryan’s photos highlight the beauty of everyday life in the workplace, a place most people seldom give much thought to.
