Adwoa Sey makes the dictionary accessible and easy-to-understand with her character called “Dot”, taking us through terms from “3 color RGB” to explaining what a widow is. These illustrations visually complement the written definition, and make learning about graphic design fun.
However, the creator has stated that her dictionary does not provide detailed explanations between more nuanced design terms, such as the difference between a widow and an orphan—she stated that many designers argue about these differences, and that detailing them would take paragraphs.
Dot’s Dictionary is not meant to be an encyclopaedia but rather a short introduction to the world of graphic design—it welcomes apprehensive learners who are just starting out.
