We previously featured a suspended staircase that doubles as an innovative work space.
London studio Haptic Architects has designed a similar elegant staircase that floats above the living room of a renovated 19th century loft apartment in Oslo.
Made of powder-coated white steel, the structure hangs from a ceiling beam and an overhead wall, connecting the lower storey living room of the Idunsgate Apartment with a mezzanine above. It features narrow vertical supports at the side and open risers that allow viewers to look up from below.
The stairs stop just before reaching the floor, and residents step onto a piece of wooden furniture that acts as a chest of drawers and a window seat.
Besides adding an element of etherealness to the apartment, the staircase creates a subtle divide between the kitchen and lounge. It also functions as a viewing platform overseeing the living room.
