In Oss, Netherlands, a 0.3 mile stretch of road on the N329 highway has recently removed its streetlights in favor of glow-in-the-dark road markings.
This road features only glow-in-the-dark road markings, created using a photo-luminescent powder integrated into the road paint, which was developed in conjunction with road construction company Heijmans.
Besides its beautiful aesthetic, this move could also save the city a lot on streetlight power.
This design is a brainchild of social design lab, Studio Roosegaarde. It took them up to two years to work through government restrictions. The studio aims to bring technology and design to the real world, with practical and beautiful results.
In one news report from the Netherlands, it was reported that this highway "looks like you are driving through a fairytale".
