The city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is set to get sleek new subways designed by automobile company BMW.
Seeking to double ridership on public transport, Kuala Lumpur has decided to work with Designworks USA, a subsidiary of BMW.
In a statement by BMW, the design of these subways will be inspired by Kuala Lumpur: its faceted architecture inspires its exterior lights, and its interior decorative panels will be inspired by traditional Malaysian design.
A blue LED lighting scheme, including under the seats, will run throughout the subway. It also has intuitive features, such as a guiding light and beeping system at the doors to aid passengers with disabilities as to when the doors are closing.
The carriages will also be fully stainless steel, 95% recyclable, and energy efficient.
Laurenz Schaffer, president of BMW Group DesignworksUSA, said about the design: "It symbolizes self-confidence, technological leadership, progress, and safety,”
By 2017, Kuala Lumpur hopes to have 58 trains up and running in their three-line metro system.
