Paris-based Thomas Subtil has created a whimsical series of images that depicts the animals of Africa living the good life in accordance to the motto “Hakuna Matata”, which means “no worries”.
While one would assume that living in the wild would be filled with anxiety and peril—trying not to get eaten can very stressful—Subtil’s digitally manipulated photographs shows a surreal, playful side to wildlife.
Instead of a cruel world where only the fittest survives, the series features unexpected, other-worldly pictures of an elephant walking a tight-rope, a zebra floating away on a balloon and other funny scenes that may be taking place away from human eyes.
Rendered mostly in black-and-one, these images have a quirky, dream-like quality that reminds us that perhaps, we shouldn’t be taking life so seriously after all.
